You had a panic attack you didn't see coming, and you're not an anxious person

Your mouth ran dry. It felt like your throat was closing and you couldn't breathe, or you thought you were having a heart attack. Maybe it was on stage, maybe it was at your desk on an ordinary Tuesday. The doctor checked everything and everything is fine. And now there's one thought: what if it happens again.

A panic attack out of nowhere is your body's alarm going off at full volume in a person who doesn't think of himself as anxious. Clinical hypnotherapy for it means teaching your nervous system it can come down, in sessions online, with a recording made for your situation. It sits alongside a doctor's workup, never instead of one.

What happened

Your body went off, and you didn't see it coming. Here's the part that doesn't fit: you don't think of yourself as an anxious person. You're a go-getter, you like people, you show up, and most people would describe you as confident and highly competent. Which is exactly why nobody saw it coming, including you. It usually looks like one of these:

  • Stage fright that isn't like you. A presentation, a pitch, the board, the meeting that mattered. Your voice cracked and your hands shook, and you've done a hundred of these before. And now the next one is on the calendar.
  • You couldn't focus, and then the room tilted. At your desk, in the car, in a meeting that didn't even matter. Your heart took off, the edges went strange, and you had to get out.
  • You were sure something was medically wrong. Chest, breath, heart. Maybe you went to the ER. They ran everything, and everything came back normal. Nobody could tell you why, and that's almost worse.

It felt like it came out of nowhere. It didn't.

When I worked in tech I had a coworker. Great guy, confident, good looking, the kind of person rooms organise themselves around. He had just won his first seven-figure executive role, and the moment he got the news he was sick to his stomach and felt like he couldn't breathe. His executive assistant called him an Uber. The next time he had to present to the board there was one thought in his head, and it wasn't the slides. It was: what if it happens again, in front of everybody.

In my experience it never comes out of nowhere. There's usually a dry spell in the business that went on longer than you told anyone. Or years of being overlooked and underappreciated, and then the promotion lands and your body doesn't trust it. Or a breakup you handled by working harder. Or months of a mind that won't stop at night. The nervous system carries all of that for a long time, and then one day, in a room that matters or in no room at all, it gives out. Not because you're weak. Because it was never given a chance to come down.

What we do

First we talk: what happened, what you felt in your body and in what order, and whether there's a date coming. Then hypnosis, which is a way of teaching your body it can come down. If there is a stage or a boardroom in your future, we rehearse it: the walk to the front, the first sentence, the moment your voice would have cracked, and we let your nervous system find out it can stand there and breathe. If there's no date, we work on the ordinary places it happened, the desk and the car and the quiet evening, so you stop living braced for the next one. Either way I record a session built for your situation, in your words, and you use it when you need it.

If there's a date and it's close, the three-day intensive is three sessions in one week, and I run one at a time. Otherwise weekly sessions work. The plan is your life, not an open-ended course.

What this is not, and when you need something else

I'm a licensed Registered Hypnotherapist in Washington, not a psychotherapist, and I don't present this as therapy. Two things I want you to hear clearly.

  • If it came with chest pain, a racing heart that didn't settle, fainting, or it happened while you were exercising, see a doctor first and get it checked. I work with people after a clear workup, not instead of one.
  • If this keeps happening, if you've started avoiding rooms, meetings, driving or flights, or if the fear has spread into the rest of your days, that is a conversation for a licensed clinician, and I'll help you find one. The work on this page is for one or two bad moments in a person who wants their days back.

And if you run a business and the thing underneath this is the stress that never switches off, that's the rest of what I do.

If you want it handled this week

  • Three-day intensive, $1,500. Three sessions in one week. If there's a date on the calendar, we build the sessions and a recording around it.
  • Weekly sessions, $250. One hour, online, when there's no date and you want your days back.
  • I run one intensive at a time. If the dates are open I can see you this week.

Questions

The questions people ask me first

Was it a panic attack?

I don't diagnose, and you don't need a label to work with me. What you had was your body's alarm going off at full volume in a place where it couldn't run and couldn't fight. If it came with chest pain, a racing heart that didn't settle, or you passed out, see a doctor first and get it checked. A clear workup is the start of this work, not a reason to skip it.

The doctor said everything is normal. So why does it still feel like something is wrong with me?

Because your body hasn't got the message yet. The tests measure your heart and your blood. They don't measure a nervous system that has been on guard for months and finally went off. Nothing is wrong with you medically, and something real happened to you. Both are true, and the second one is what we work on.

There's no date. It happened at my desk, or in the car. Is this still for me?

Yes. Most of the people I see with this didn't have a stage. They had a Tuesday. We work on the same thing either way: teaching your body it's safe to come down, so you stop living braced for the next one.

I have a presentation in ten days. Is that enough time?

Usually, yes. The three-day intensive exists for exactly this: three sessions in one week, each one built around the date, and a recording you use the morning of. If the date is two months out, weekly sessions work too. Tell me the date in your request and I'll say plainly whether I think we can get there.

I'm not an anxious person. Why did this happen to me?

That's the thing almost everyone says in the first session, and I believe you. Nobody reading this would describe you as anxious. In my experience it rarely comes from nowhere: a long dry spell in the business, years of being overlooked, a breakup you never fully put down, months of a mind that won't stop at night. The nervous system holds all of that, and then one day it picks a bad moment to let go.

What actually happens in the sessions?

We talk first: what happened, what you felt in your body, and in what order. Then hypnosis. We teach your body the room before you walk into it, whether that room is a stage, a board meeting, or your own desk at nine in the morning. I record a session built for your situation, in your words, and you use it when you need it. The full walk-through is on the how it works page.

Is this therapy?

No. I'm a licensed Registered Hypnotherapist in Washington, not a psychotherapist, and I don't present this as therapy. If this keeps happening, if you've started avoiding rooms, driving or flights, or if the fear has spread into the rest of your days, that is a conversation for a licensed clinician and I'll help you find one. One or two bad moments, a clear workup, and a life you want back: that's mine.

Will it never happen again?

Nobody honest can promise you that, and I won't. What I can tell you is what I see: people walk in with their body already rehearsing the disaster, and they walk out knowing what it feels like to stand there and breathe. Then they go and do it.
