Hypnotherapy for Gay Men After Divorce or a Long-Term Breakup

They say the longer you’ve been together, the longer the grief after the divorce.

The challenge after the divorce is not just grief; it’s identity collapse, it’s difficulty adjusting to a new reality, the false narrative that nobody wants me after (write your age in).

There’s something nobody talks about: an increase in substance use (some men are going to the bar or gay bar way too often just to numb the pain, and it becomes problematic after a while).

Identity collapse. When I went through my divorce, it was probably the worst part. I had a life that checked all the boxes: six-figure career, family reunions, mutual friends, daily routine together, and now, it’s GONE.

Clinical hypnotherapy vs. talk therapy. Honestly, either or BOTH works very well.

Clinical hypnotherapy is an evidence-based modality that works with the unconscious mind and is suitable to mitigate stress, grief, and anxiety. With the combination of personalized guidance and coaching using motivational interviewing, foundational acceptance and commitment therapy, and solution-oriented coaching, specifically how to move forward, that can be the right option.

Multicultural approach. I often work with people from different cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. In my practice, I utilize cultural humility, a non-pathologizing approach, and an approach of liberation psychology.

In other words, in my practice, I celebrate Black men, BIPOC, Immigrants, and people with disabilities. Yes, I do celebrate people from ALL cultures, backgrounds, ethnic groups, and nationalities.

Divorce and career. Divorce affects your daily life in a very big way; some men are either overworking to not feel the pain, or have a very hard time concentrating on work. Sometimes divorce or breakup may bring up the desire for a change of your career or making a radical change in your life. This is NOT something you want to navigate alone.

Rebound? Should you jump into a new relationship right after a breakup? Well, it’s very much possible. There’s no healing period you should wait. The better question is HOW you approach your new relationship. Clinical hypnotherapy helps you to recognize the patterns you may not notice yourself, and motivational interviewing and personalized guidance help you to take practical steps to make a new relationship work OR let it go if it was rushed and the right fit.

Let me be clear! I can’t hypnotize you into happiness and let your trauma and grief go away at a snap of my fingers. This is NOT how clinical hypnosis or any modality works. What I can offer is a different approach if previous attempts with therapy didn’t work or you want to try something new and created specifically for you. Remember, not every therapist who slaps an LGBTQ+ label on their website can actually deliver culturally appropriate care for you.

When hypnotherapy is NOT a good option: acute crisis, active suicidal ideation, heavy substance use, debilitating clinical depression to the point that you have a very hard time performing basic tasks, psychosis, active nervous breakdown. In those cases, please seek the help of licensed mental health professional. If you’re in crisis, please call 911 or 988
